Introduction: Why Growth Matters

Growth is something we all strive for, yet it often comes with moments of uncertainty, discomfort, and even loss. The journey isn’t always straightforward—it’s full of twists and turns, breakthroughs and setbacks. But as we grow, we discover strength, resilience, and clarity that we didn’t know we possessed.

This week, let’s reflect on the beauty of self-growth through a powerful poem that captures the essence of evolving while staying true to yourself.

Poem

Featured Poem: "The Layers" by Stanley Kunitz

"I have walked through many lives,
some of them my own,
and I am not who I was,
though some principle of being
abides, from which I struggle
not to stray.

When I look behind,
as I am compelled to look
before I can gather strength
to proceed on my journey,
I see the milestones dwindling
toward the horizon
and the slow fires trailing
from the abandoned campsites,
over which scavenger angels
wheel on heavy wings."

The Meaning of the Poem

Kunitz's "The Layers" is a profound reflection on personal growth, transformation, and resilience. It invites us to view our lives as a journey, one filled with countless stages and versions of ourselves. Each "layer" represents a past version of who we were—shaped by our experiences, relationships, and decisions. Some of these layers we carry forward, while others we leave behind as we grow into new versions of ourselves.

The poem acknowledges that this process of growth isn’t always easy. We’re often compelled to look back before moving forward, revisiting our past to find meaning or closure. The imagery of “abandoned campsites” and “milestones dwindling” captures the bittersweet nature of this reflection—there’s beauty in what we’ve left behind, but also strength in our ability to keep moving forward.

What’s most powerful is Kunitz’s reminder that despite all the changes we undergo, there’s a constant within us—a "principle of being"—that remains steady. This core is what grounds us, guiding us as we navigate the uncertainties of growth.

How It Resonates with Us

This poem speaks to anyone who has experienced change, whether it’s letting go of a past version of yourself, walking away from relationships that no longer serve you, or adapting to new challenges. Growth often feels messy and uncomfortable. It asks us to shed familiar layers, face uncertainty, and embrace transformation.

Yet, these moments of discomfort are where we find our strength. The layers we’ve shed don’t disappear—they become part of our story, shaping who we are today. And while the path ahead may seem uncertain, Kunitz reminds us that we carry within us the resilience and wisdom to keep moving forward.

We all have layers—some we’re proud of, others we may wish we could forget. But every one of them has contributed to the person you are now. This poem invites us to honor that journey, to embrace both the pain and the beauty of growth, and to trust in our ability to keep evolving.

Deep Questions to Reflect On

  1. What layers of your past self-have you outgrown?

    • Think about how your challenges and experiences have shaped you. What have you let go of to make space for growth?

  2. What remains constant within you, even as you change?

    • Consider the values, passions, or dreams that have stayed with you through every stage of life.

  3. How do you honor both the person you were and the person you’re becoming?

    • Reflect on how you can celebrate your past while fully embracing your future.

Answering the Questions

  • Growth often requires us to let go of the familiar, but it also opens doors to new opportunities and perspectives. By reflecting on the lessons we’ve learned and the values we hold dear, we can find balance between honoring our past and embracing our future.

  • Your core—your "principle of being"—is what grounds you. It’s the steady light that guides you through moments of uncertainty and growth.

Actionable Steps for Personal Growth

  1. Reflect on Your Journey:

    • Take 15 minutes to journal about how you’ve grown over the past year. Write about the challenges you’ve faced, what you’ve learned, and how you’ve changed.

  2. Define Your Core Values:

    • Create a list of 3-5 values that define your essence (e.g., kindness, curiosity, resilience). These are your guiding principles during times of growth and change.

  3. Celebrate Your Growth:

    • Think of a recent achievement or positive change, no matter how small. Reward yourself for the effort you’ve put into growing.

  4. Practice Letting Go:

    • Identify one thing you’re holding onto—like a fear, regret, or limiting belief—that no longer serves you. Write it down on a piece of paper and destroy it as a symbolic act of release.

  5. Take One Brave Step Forward:

    • Choose one area of your life where you want to grow (e.g., relationships, career, health). Take one small, actionable step this week that aligns with your growth goals.

Closing Thoughts: Your Layers Tell a Story

Kunitz reminds us that growth is a process of becoming, of walking through many “lives” and embracing the lessons they offer. Every layer you’ve shed tells a story of resilience, courage, and transformation.

So today, honor the layers you’ve left behind and the ones still forming. Trust that your journey—like Kunitz’s—will continue to unfold in ways you can’t yet imagine.

What step will you take today to peel back a new layer of growth?
